Artificial Theater

In collaboration with 1880, Y Art Project is excited to present Zhang Wei's solo exhibition, Artificial Theater. Zhang Wei, an artist deeply influenced by the vibrant life surrounding a theater in his hometown, explores the blurred lines between reality and performance in his work. Growing up in this environment, he witnessed how traditional culture gradually absorbed modern elements like pop and fashion, creating a fast-paced, hybrid aesthetic.

In Artificial Theater, Zhang Wei reflects on how these changes shape our understanding of identity. Inspired by his previous work and even a Japanese virtual reality game, he merges real-life performers with classical, political, or celebrity figures, crafting surreal, almost mythical characters. These figures, made from collaged parts of ordinary people, raise questions about authenticity and the roles we play in society.

Through this exhibition, Zhang invites us to consider the masks we wear, both in virtual spaces and the real world. His artificial figures offer a fresh, sometimes unsettling perspective on how identities are constructed and deconstructed in the modern era.
